 GLAMWEAZEL
The World of Glamweazel (aka Lushi/Jerry T Jones)..The Eternal Quest for the Gold and Shiny...... I suppose that most biogs traditionally begin with the birth, the first tooth, schoolday shenanigans and family dramas etc, but in reality I look on 1972 as being my ground zero, a Thursday night in October to be precise. It is difficult to believe now how big an event Top of the Pops used to be in the grey and strike ridden early seventies, but a whole generation of teens were moulded and influenced (some more permanently than others!) by the multi coloured cacophony of glam and glitz that burst into the sitting room, often sending father into another fit of apoplexy as David Bowie flirted outrageously with Ronno, his super-cool and godlike guitarist... Yes, that was when it all started for me, the eternal quest for that alternative life style and the elusive ‘gold and shiny’…so where did it all go wrong? Well, in retrospect, I realise that it didn’t go wrong at all. I have been lucky enough to achieve several of my teenage dreams and still survive to tell the tale. .. Jubilee Year, the ‘year of the punk’ was amazing. At last my fellow dreamers could parade up and down Bromley High street in our pink leopard skins, and still make a godawful racket in a succession of dodgy but thoroughly exciting bands. My first ‘break’ was playing with Splodgnessabounds, best known for their legendary mini epic “Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps”, my father commenting on hearing it “My God, what have I spawned!”…a few weeks later I left home... And so the journey began in earnest... Having achieved an ambition of sorts, (Top of the Pops, but unfortunately due to be broadcast when the BBC went inconveniently on strike, doh!), I landed a proper record deal with ..One The Juggler.. and became a ‘professional musician’ in 1981. Touring, videos, the whole deal…and absolutely nothing in the bank to show for it, but some priceless memories all the same. Four years later, as often happens to life’s fireworks, it fizzled to an end but due to the enthusiasm and love of The Jugglers greatest fan, Mitzi Bagpuss, there might yet be life injected into the old dog…..watch this space, and check out www.onethejuggler.co.uk for details... Soon after wheels came off the Jugglers caravan, I formed a synth pop trio (all very big hair and eighties) called ..Boom Boom Room.., who actually had a hit in the UK with Here Comes the Man. This went on to be a smash in South Africa, and was recently covered by The Parlotones, peaking at number 2, and even outselling the musical mundanity that is James Blunt (…now that’s beautiful!)... In the Nineties, the musical juices dried up somewhat as the perils and more specifically the arseholes of the music industry took their toll. I needed a rest. As a peaceful diversion, I started to paint. I have always been a bit of a petrol head, and have over the years received commissions to paint classic cars of varying descriptions, and as a somewhat unproductive member of the Guild of Motoring Artists exhibit my doodles at occasional exhibitions... The new Millennium found me back in the studio again, producing library albums with my great friend Simon Etchell. Then, in 2004 I decided it was time to write and produce my ‘labour of love’, under my alter ego of ..Glamweazel (Mask Parade, on Real Vision Records).., and rediscover my love of playing live with a fabulous bunch of old reprobates dedicated to the musical mayhem of Messrs Wood and Lane called ..The Ronnies.. (www.2ronnies.co.uk). I am currently working with a wonderful young singer called ..Olivia D’Souza..(www.myspace.com/oliviadsouza) It’s just the beginning...
